Spring Cleaning for Stitchers
Out with the Old, In with the New!
Ah, spring—the season of fresh starts, blooming flowers, and finally realizing that maybe it’s time to deal with that pile of unfinished needlepoint projects that’s been staring at you since last year. (No judgment. We’ve all got one.)
Spring cleaning isn’t just for closets and junk drawers; it’s the perfect time to sort through your needlepoint stash, make space for exciting new projects, and rediscover the joy of stitching with intention. I know it can often feel overwhelming to go through your endless supply of yarn and projects to let me share with a few tips to help you get started.
The Great Needlepoint Refresh: Where to Start?
Step 1: Gather Everything in One Place
Yes, everything. The WIPs (works in progress), the UFOs (unfinished objects), the canvases you forgot you bought, and every little thread scrap you’ve ever saved because it “might be useful someday”. Lay it all out so you can see exactly what you're working with. I know this might feel overwhelming but just trust the process.
Step 2: Sort with Intention
Now, take a deep breath and start sorting into three piles
Keep & Prioritize – These are projects you absolutely love and are excited to finish. Maybe they’ve been on pause, but you still adore them. Great! They stay, make sure you put them somewhere front and center so you can grab them anytime you need a little happy fix.
Reassess & Repurpose – Be honest—are you ever really going to finish that piece from five years ago? If not, consider repurposing it (can parts be turned into gifts, ornaments, or bookmarks?) or passing it on to a fellow stitcher who will love it.
Let It Go – If a project no longer sparks joy (or makes you cringe), it’s okay to say goodbye. You can donate unfinished projects to local craft groups, schools, or charity organizations that welcome fabric arts. Or, you can just close your eyes and gently put it in the trash, but whatever you do, do not… I repeat DO NOT start to calculate how much money you have spent on this no-joy project. Those funds should simply be considered entertainment costs or as I like to call them, my “Stitcher’s tax” it’s just the price I pay to love this hobby.
Step 3: Organize Your Threads & Tools
Messy threads and scattered needles?
Sort Threads by Color or Brand – Store them in labeled boxes, drawer organizers, or thread rings so you can find what you need quickly.
Tame the Tangles – Wind loose skeins onto bobbins or use floss bags to keep everything neat.
Create a “Ready-to-Go” Basket – Keep one small basket or pouch for current projects, so you always have something to grab and stitch when you sit down..
Step 4: Give Your Stitching Space a Refresh
Your stitching area should be as enjoyable as your craft! Wipe down your workspace, add better lighting if needed (because hello, aging eyes), and treat yourself to a cozy chair cushion. A well-organized space makes stitching feel even more relaxing.
